OCTOBER 9, 2012 — Vulcan Materials Company (NYSE: VMC) last week christened the M/V Hazel Demery, a new tug boat that will be used at the company's Grand Rivers facility.

The Grand Rivers facility includes a large limestone quarry, processing plant and harbor. Vulcan, a member of the S&P 500 index, is the nation's largest producer of construction aggregates and its crushed stone products are widely used in all types of construction projects. In addition to distributing products by truck and rail, Vulcan ships large quantities of stone by barge on the Mississippi River and Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway. The new tug boat is named for Hazel Demery, a nurse and prominent member of the Grand Rivers community. Mrs. Demery was guest of honor at the christening ceremony held at Vulcan's harbor, which is adjacent to the Kentucky Dam & Locks.

Beginning in 1951, Mrs. Demery worked as a nurse for Reed Crushed Stone, which was acquired by Vulcan in 1990. Mrs. Demery continued working for Vulcan until she retired in 2009 with 58 years of service.

Built by Sisco Marine LLC dba Marine Inland Fabricators, Panama City, Fla., the latest addition to the Vulcan fleet serves as a harbor tug and features an elevating pilot house that enables it to clear overhead restrictions in harbor and provide the pilot a view above empty barges when elevated.

With a length of 60 ft, width of 24 ft and draft of 5 ft 3 in, the Hazel Demery is powered by two 500 hp Cummins QSK19 engines with electrical power provided by twoJohn Deere 40 kW generators.
