July 3, 2008 Cosco Busan pilot to retireCaptain John Cota, who was piloting the container ship Cosco Busan when it ran into San Francisco's Bay Bridge last fall, has decided to retire rather than testify at a hearing before the California State Pilot Commission. In addition to pilot commission disciplinary action, Cota faces a number of state and federal charges, some of which could well bring him a prison term should he be convicted. Any testimony he gave at the pilot commission hearing, scheduled before an administrative law judge on September 2, could be used as evidence in the other proceedings that he faces.
