Washington Marine Group promotes Spiro Risvas
Steve Frasher, Washington Marine Group (WMG) Chief Executive Officer has announced the appointment of Spiro Risvas to the position of Senior Vice President, WMG --Shipyards Division.
As Senior Vice President, WMG Shipyards, Mr. Risvas is responsible for all operations at the Group's three wholly owned shipyards: Vancouver Dydock, Vancouver Shipyards, and Victoria Shipyards.
Mr. Risvas grew up in Greece, and attended the Merchant Marine Academy of Aspropyrgos where he obtained a Marine Engineering Diploma. Following that, he sailed for several years as third, then second, then Chief Engineer on a number of ships engaged in global commerce.
In 1980, he immigrated to Canada and the following year joined Burrard Drydock/Burrard Yarrows Corp/Versatile Pacific Shipyards as Ship Manager, Ship Repairs. In 1989, he progressed to Contract Manager, New Construction followed by Commercial Manager, Ship Repairs, in 1990.
After the company was shut down (1991), he was self-employed and worked on a contract basis as a Ship Repair Superintendent for Key Marine Industries.
In 1992, he joined Vancouver Shipyards Co. Ltd. as Assistant Ship Repair Superintendent and then advanced to Repair Manager, Ship Repair, responsible for Vancouver Drydock's operations. In 1994, he joined Unithai Shipyard & Engineering Ltd., in Thailand, as Assistant General Manager, Ship Repair Division. At Unithai, he progressed from General Manager, Ship Repair Division to General Manager, Business (Shipyard).
In 1998, Todd Pacific Shipyard, of Seattle, hired Mr. Risvas as Director of Commercial Ship Repair and within two years he was promoted to Director, Ship Repair Facilities & Special Projects.
In 2006, he moved back to Vancouver and became Vice President, Program Management for the Washington Marine Group Shipyards.
