Maritime puzzle picture

Here's an extract from an email from a long-time MARINE LOG reader:

I noted with interest something on the cover of your July 08 edition of Marine Log. It shows the vessel Corona Emblem but what's interesting me is the deliberate pattern of what appears to be holes located just above the propeller. I am curious as to the function of those holes.

We're baffled--as is a famed shipbuilding guru we consult on such things (hint, he resides in Delray Beach)
