November 6, 2007 Nichols Brothers closure may be temporaryThough Nichols Brothers Boat Builders, Inc. sent workers home last week, the closure may be temporary. A story posted on line by the Everett Washington Heraldnet.com, says the Whidbey Island shipbuilder has taken no steps to pull out of its partnership with two other firms sharing a $348 million contract for building four new 144-car vehicle ferries for Washington State Ferries. The story quotes Steve Reinmuth, chief of staff to state transportation secretary Paula Hammond as saying: "We have talked to Todd (Shipyards, the lead contractor). We have every reason to believe that Nichols will continue to be a vital part of the consortium." State and local agency officials learned Monday that the layoff may only extend for four weeks, says the Heraldnet item. Meantime, there's still an apparently live feed from a webcam showing progress on one the Bay Delta tractor tugs under construction at the yard. |
