August 12, 2007 STX to build nine 12,400 TEU boxships STX Shipbuilding Co. has won a $1.5 billion contract from a Greek shipping company to build nine 12,400 TEU super containerships. The deal calls for the Korean yard to deliver the 12,400-TEU vessels to Nike Group by late 2011, reports Korea Overseas Information Service. STX Shipbuilding says this is its first order for a containership in the 10,000 TEU and over size range. "The contract has paved the way for STX to develop into a large shipyard that can manufacture high-end ships," said STX. "We will expand into such areas as very large crude carriers, icebreakers and cruise ships." With the latest deal, STX shipbuilding has clinched orders worth $7.2 billion so far this year. The shipyard has raised its sales target for this year to $10 billion from an earlier $5.5 billion. Last year, it won orders worth $4 billion . |
