Austal books its biggest order

Australian shipbuilder Austal has inked an unconditional contract to build four fast ferries, consisting of two 69 meter and two 88 meter Austal Auto Express vehicle-passenger catamaran designs for an undisclosed customer.

The value of the order is A$223 million ($182.1 million), according to the company announcement released on the Australian Securities Exchange. This makes it Austal's largest individual contract to date.

The Auto Express 88 vehicle passenger ferries will each be able to carry 1,200 passengers, 120 cars and 15 trucks at speeds of 34 knots.

The AutoExpress 69 vessels will each have a carrying capacity of 650 passengers, 50 cars and 15 trucks and will reach speeds of 30 knots.

All four ferries will be delivered in 2009 and will be built in Australia. Commenting on the announcement Austal Executive Chairman, John Rothwell said: "This huge contract is of particular importance, not only in adding to our current strong order book but also as it confirms our presence in a region with substantial growth opportunities for Austal."

Austal recently delivered the first of two Auto Express 88 vehicle passengers ferries for IDO for service in Istanbul. Overall, Austal has built and received orders for 10 fast ferries from IDO since 1995.
