Budget proposes seven Navy ships in 2007
The Bush Administration sent its $439.3 billion defense budget request for fiscal 2007 to Congress today.
The Administration is asking for $11.2 billion for what it calls "more capable and multi-mission ships." It is proposing to build seven new warships in 2007. It is asking for $2.6 billion to start construction of two DD(X) destroyers and $957 million two Littoral Combat Ships. Also requested is funding for one Virginia-class submarine, one LHA(R) amphibious assault ship and one T-AKE logistics ship.
Looking for savings, the Administration is seeking to cancel the T-AOE(X) fast tanker ship, saving $4.4 billion through 2011,
