Navy presses ahead with DD(X)
Kenneth Krieg, Undersecretary of Defense for Acquisition, has reportedly signed a Destroyer Acquisition Decision Memorandum--the final document needed for the Navy to proceed with construction of the DD(X) destroyer.
According to press reports, the memo provides for acquisition of eight ships. Initially, Northrop Grumman and General Dynamics will proceed with one ship each. The memo does not resolve which yards will build the following six ships.
Meantime, the level of funding for the DD(X) program is still unsettled, with the FY 2006 Defense appropriations bill still before a House-Senate conference that will have to resolve major differences on the ship.
