Brittany Ferries signs LOI with Aker Yards

France's Brittany Ferries and Aker Yards have signed a new letter of intent. It covers construction of a new type of ferry designed to carry passengers, private cars and road cargo vehicles between France and the United Kingdom at a speed of 23 knots.

The 167 m long and 26.8 m wide vessel would have space for 1,500 passengers and 1.1 km of vehicle deck space.

Costing around 105-110 million euro ($125-130 million), the ferry is slated for delivery in October 2008 at the latest.

The Aker Yards orderbook also includes another order from Brittany Ferries, a trailer ropax worth euros 80 million to be delivered in autumn 2007. That order included an option for a similar vessel which has now been transfered to the new LOI, which would give some 700 man years of work to Aker Finnyards.
