Kvichak delivers cats, has fireboat under construction

Seattle's Kvichak Marine has been keeping busy.

The California Department of Fish & Game (CDFG) recently took delivery of two 54 ft all-aluminum catamarans constructed by the yard. Meantime, Kvichak is currently constructing a 40 ft Fast Response fireboat for the Los Angeles County Fire Department (LACFD). Scheduled for delivery in fall 2004, the all-aluminum vessel will replace a 37’ Campbell-built vessel the department has been operating for over 25 years.

The T54 ft Thresher and Marlin bring to five the total of Kvichak-built catamarans to join CDFG's patrol operations along the California coast.

Designed by Teknicraft of Auckland, New Zealand, the partially foil-supported catamarans have a beam of 20 ft and weigh nearly 28 tons fully loaded. Powered by twin Caterpillar 3196 DITA diesel engines coupled to Twin Disc MG 5114A marine gears, the Thresher and Marlin will cruise the coastline at about 26 knots, reaching top speeds of about 30 knots.

"We chose the catamaran design after an extensive search, and determined the additional deck space, speed, and greater fuel efficiency is more consistent with our offshore island patrol mission than any other design," said CDFG's Captain Bob Wright. "The addition of these cats will greatly increase our presence along the California coast, enabling us to better serve the public in a safer and more efficient manner."

Each vessel will have a permanent crew of four during patrol operations. The Thresher will conduct commercial and sport fishery enforcement patrols from Santa Barbara to the Mexican Border, including the Channel Islands. Stationed at Berkeley Marina, the Marlin will serve as the primary fisheries enforcement vessel for the San Francisco Bay and the ocean waters from Monterey to Fort Bragg.

Deck equipment includes an aft-deck A-frame to deploy and retrieve a Hurricane inflatable. A rotating articulated crab block davit enables the hoisting and retrieval of fishing traps and pots of a diameter up to 60" and to accommodate swinging pots and traps aboard, a 48" wide lift-out side opening is positioned next to the davit.

Additional vessel features include:

Flybridge with bimini top
Northern Lights 12kW generator
12 inch crab block

1200 gallon fuel capacity

Fully equipped galley

Accommodations for six

Safety and electronics packages

Exhaust system – Broomfield's Marine Exhaust

FIREBOAT
Designed by Jensen Maritime Consultants, of Seattle, the fireboat has a beam of 13 ft 6 inches and is powered by twin Caterpillar 3126B engines coupled to Twin Disc MG-5075A gears, which provide a top-end speed of some 27 knots when fully loaded.

To optimize vessel control and firefighting capacity, LACFD chose a Cummins 6BTA5.9-M3 dedicated fire pump engine, directly coupled to a Hale 80-FC 2400 GPM pump. A Stang fire monitor provides 1000 GPM of water flow and the fireboat has a 50-gallon AR firefighting foam system.

Designed and constructed as a multi-mission vessel, LACFD will utilize the fireboat for fire fighting, emergency search and rescue, water recovery operations, emergency medical service and vessel assistance.
