First Wärtsilä marine DF engines order
Wärtsilä Corporation has received the first order for Wärtsilä 32DF marine engines. PGS Production in Norway has contracted for two Wärtsilä 18V32DF engines to be installed in the FPSO (floating, production, storage and offloading) vessel Petrojarl I.

The two engines, each developing 3720 kW at 720 rev/min, will be supplied as complete generating sets. They will burn wellhead gas.

The Wärtsilä 32DF engine type provides an alternative to the Wärtsilä 32GD type for using gaseous fuels in marine installations. The 32GD type has been highly successful in the offshore market with 38 engines in service and on order. The first Wärtsilä 32GD engines were delivered in 1989 and individual engines have more than 70,000 running hours.

The Wärtsilä 32DF engine has been introduced to marine applications to meet the requirements of a new safety class for installations with a gas pressure of less than 10 bar in a single-pipe arrangement.

Class approval in principal for this safety concept is now in hand and a class-approved control system based on the Wärtsilä WECS 8000 electronic control system has been introduced on the Wärtsilä 32DF marine engine.

Whereas the gas-diesel engine (GD type) injects high-pressure gas fuel into the engine cylinders, the DF type employs gaseous fuels at low pressures. In gas mode, the DF engine operates according to the lean-burn Otto process. Gas is admitted into the air inlet channels to individual cylinders during the intake stroke to give a lean, premixed air-gas mixture in the engine combustion chamber. Reliable ignition is obtained by injecting a small quantity of diesel oil directly into the combustion chamber as pilot fuel.

To reach low NOx emissions, it is essential that the quantity of injected diesel oil fuel is very small. The Wärtsilä 32DF engines therefore use a "micro-pilot" injection with less than one per cent of the fuel energy requirement at nominal load. As a result, the NOx emissions of a Wärtsilä 32DF engine are about one-tenth those of the standard diesel version.

An important contribution to satisfactory running of the Wärtsilä 32DF engine comes from the application of full electronic control. When running on gas with a premixed air-gas mixture and micro-pilot injection, the combustion must be closely controlled to prevent knocking and misfiring. The Wärtsilä WECS 8000 control system provides control of the air-gas ratio, and the quantity and timing of the pilot fuel injection to keep every cylinder at the correct operating point between the knock and misfiring limits. The pilot fuel system is a common-rail system with one engine-mounted high-pressure pump supplying diesel oil to the injection valves at a constant pressure of 900 bar. The gas fuel is supplied to the engine at a pressure of less than four bar.

Wärtsilä 32DF engines have been installed in stationary applications since 1997. Individual engines have passed the 20,000 running hours' mark. They are operating in cogeneration and electricity-only plants.

Besides the offshore industry, potential marine applications for Wärtsilä 32DF engines include ferries and coastal vessels using liquefied natural gas, and as a source of power using boil-off gas in LNG transportation.

Built specifically as an FPSO vessel for North Sea service in 1986, the Petrojarl 1 has been fitted with various additional equipment over the years. The two Wärtsilä-engined sets will add necessary electricity generating capacity.

They are currently being installed during a planned major drydocking before the vessel takes up a three-year contract on the Glitne field in the North Sea.

The vessel will operate under Norwegian jurisdiction where a carbon dioxide tax is levied on power production in the offshore sector. The efficiency of the power plant thus has a significant impact on operational costs. As the operator's requirements also include low NOx emissions, the Wärtsilä 32DF engine emerged as the first choice for this installation.

PGS Production already employs Wärtsilä GD (gas-diesel) engines on two other FPSO vessels. The Petrojarl Foinaven has four Wärtsilä 16V32GD engines and four Wärtsilä 18V32GD engines, while the Varg has four Wärtsilä 18V32GD engines. These have all given good service experience which contributed to the decision to order the Wärtsilä 32DF engines for the "Petrojarl I".

Carnival Spirit sails with smokeless diesel engine
In a working partnership between Carnival Corporation and Wärtsilä Corporation, the new 88,500-ton cruise ship Carnival Spirit has been fitted with the cruise industry's first EnviroEngine smokeless diesel engine.

The Carnival Spirit, the first ship in a new class for Carnival Cruise Lines, delivered from Kvaerner Masa-Yards, arrived in Miami earlier this week. Its inaugural season will include two Panama Canal sailings, a series of Alaska and Hawaii voyages, and a unique eight-day Caribbean schedule from Miami.

The ship is equipped with the first of the new class of EnviroEngines.

The modified engine is part of a project between Carnival and Wärtsilä to develop a new "earth-friendly" power system. Carnival and Wärtsilä will now observe the operation of the engine in its own environment during the Alaska season.

After this initial operation a second engine will be converted to an EnviroEngine. The modified engines, part of a diesel-electric propulsion system, exceed the international standards for emissions set out in MARPOL Annex VI.

The two Wärtsilä 46 EnviroEngines use a common rail fuel injection system that enables injection pressures to be kept sufficiently high at all engine speeds - even at the lowest levels - to ensure clean combustion with no visible smoke emissions. T

he EnviroEngines will be particularly beneficial for use in port, as they produce no visible emissions even when lightly loaded for producing energy for lighting, air conditioning and other hotel systems.

The EnviroEngine design is expected to be used for other vessels currently under construction, including 88,500-ton ships by Carnival Cruise Lines and for sister companies Holland America and Costa.
